Increased brain cell activity boosts brain fluid levels of a protein linked to Alzheimer’s disease, according to new research from scientists at the School of Medicine. Senior author David M. Holtzman, MD, said the findings should help advance efforts to treat Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative disorders associated with the tau protein.

For decades, neuroscientist Richard Davidson, PhD, has been researching the positive impact of contemplative practices, such as meditation, on the brain. The work may have important ramifications for treating mental disorders. Davidson this month delivered the Witherspoon Memorial Lecture on Religion and Science for the Assembly Series and a talk for the Department of Psychology in Arts & Sciences.

Apryle M. Cotton has been named the new assistant vice chancellor for human resources, announced Lorraine A. Goffe-Rush, vice chancellor for HR. Cotton, whose appointment took effect March 3, succeeds Goffe-Rush, who was promoted Dec. 31 to vice chancellor.

The Dachau Concentration Camp opened in Nazi Germany 81 years ago and eventually interned almost 200,000 male prisoners from all over Europe. Until March 28, the traveling exhibition “Names Instead of Numbers” will be on display at Olin Library, showcasing prisoners’ personal histories.
